Economy in Alberta: |
|
The strength of Alberta’s economy lies in the petroleum industry followed by agriculture and forestry and is one of the strongest economies in Canada. |
Within Canada, Alberta is the largest producer of conventional crude oil, synthetic crude, natural gas and gas products. Alberta is the second largest exporter of natural gas and the fourth largest producer globally. |
Alberta is home to the infamous Athabasca Oil Sands (Athabasca Tar Sands) which have estimated unconventional oil reserves approximately equal to the conventional oil reserves of the rest of the world. With the development of new extraction methods synthetic crude oil can be produced at costs close to those of conventional crude. Another factor determining the feasibility of oil extraction from Alberta’s Tar Sands is the price of oil. The increase in oil price has made it more than profitable to extract the oil. |
Agriculture plays an important role in Alberta’s economy. Nearly one half of all Canadian beef is produced in Alberta. It is one of the leading producers of plains buffalo, sheep for wool and mutton for the consumer market. Alberta is also a major producer of wheat and canola, and has vast northern forest reserves of softwood, which allows it to produce large quantities of lumber, oriented strand board and plywood. Several plants in Alberta supply bleached wood pulp and newsprint to North America and the Pacific Rim nations. |
|
Alberta has a booming tourism industry, with attractions ranging from outdoor activities and festivals to shopping malls, professional athletic events and international sporting events. Alberta is home to rich and lush natural attractions and offers magnificent spots for hiking, skiing, camping, hunting and fishing. Some of the landmarks in Alberta worth mentioning are; West Edmonton Mall, Wood Buffalo National Park, Elk Island National Park, Columbia Icefield, Banff National Park and ski resorts such as Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, Marmot Basin, Norquay and Nakiska. |
